An association representing the custom electronics industry has made changes to its bylaws concerning the appointment of board members. The move comes as the group rethinks its leadership structure amid a search for a new CEO.

CEDIA's board of directors recently voted to extend the term length of its board members from two to three years, industry news site CE Pro reported Tuesday. At the same time, the board agreed to remove the association CEO as a voting member. Board members will remain term-limited to six years.

CEDIA has been without a full-time CEO since Tabatha O'Connor left the Fishers, Ind.-based [4]association in January. Board chairperson Rob Sutherland told members in a letter that the bylaw changes where needed to ensure leadership continuity as the global organization and industry it represents deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, according to CE Pro.

"The last year has brought many challenges for each of us personally and professionally—but I think we have every reason to be proud of the work we have done over the last year," board chairperson Rob Sutherland said in the letter. "Over the last 18 months, the importance of leadership continuity has come into sharp focus for the CEDIA Board across several fronts."

CEDIA would normally solicit nominations for new board members at this time but won't because of the bylaw changes, he added. The association's governance committee is also reviewing the board selection process with a focus on diversity and inclusion.

"CEDIA acknowledges that our board needs to accurately reflect and represent the entire industry, and we are seeking to address it," Sutherland said.
